Default Oak Island Money Pit

In 1796 this pit, concealed by a layer of flagstones, was discovered. Subsequent digging by generations of treasure hunters revealed further layers of logs and metal that oxidised as soon as it made contact with the air.
Who created this pit and why?

I remember this story on an episode of the 70's program In Search Of; if I recall, it was postulated as having been the hiding spot for Blackbeard's treasure. Has anyone gotten any further in the search?

I watched a documentary about this the other night, and was going to post but forgot to.

Apparently it has multiple shafts that lead to the sea, and these were trapped in such a way that if you didn't know what you were doing (which they didn't) you'd end up flooding it.

It's a shame they lost the warning stone, it'd have been very interesting to know what it said.

I can't imagine who built it. It's quite a feat of engineering, and I can't imagine it wasn't made without considerable time, effort and expertise, so I'll be honest, I have no idea.

It's well and truly named a Money Pit since so many people have spent so much money digging and never recovered their losses.

It would be hilarious if it is just some form of naturally occuring sink-hole.

Very, very interesting.

Any other obscure historical tidbits like this I'd be way into. I wonder what the story is about these Coptic fellows? If they build similar burial pits in Egypt?

Anybody found my watch down there?

Seriously though, I dont think Captain Kid had the time nor ability to build the thing. It might be the other way around. Maybe he heard about it from one of his dishonest mates and went there to rob it?

I think its an illusion.
All the engineering... nonsense.

Its on an island... dig deep on any island and you will find it flooding.

If anything, it's an old well.

And BTW- Pirates did not bury their treasures...

Movies like Goonies and Robert Louis Stevenson notwithstanding.
