For the first time in a while, I can only say, I agree and TRY to understand each point and remember to use it.
Thank you for speaking sense.

Let's see if I have this right.

First, we can discuss an idea if we are willing to learn the other person's POV, and we can learn only if we are willing to listen and ask questions.

Second,an intellectual discussion should stick to the question, and avoid replies like, "Oh, only Karl Marx would think that!" Give reasons for your disagreement, or explain your reservations if you basically agree.

Third, control your emotions and back off if the disputant becomes emotional. If you can't stay in control, admit it and back off.
Last, it's OK to ask iffy or hypothetical questions; questions about objective or subjective matters. Just know what you're asking.

Sounds OK to me, but I have an obsessive/compulsive personality and can really get hung up on things. What then?

Hey! it's a good post.

I tend to disagree with you shouldn't fallaciously argue. I like to fallaciously argue, it's what seperates us from machines.

That was very helpful. I agree that listening is more important then talking.

Indeed a great excerpt and book; it deserves a thorough review. Thanks.

Thanks
Worth a second reading, so perhaps we should all copy it for future review. I hope this aids us in the celebration of ideas that Historum, and for the most part forums like it, have become. When I worked in academia we had to wait all year to discuss issues this quickly. Now anyone can make a point and have it discussed, sometimes on the same day.

I might be going to read and study this article, as I apparently seem to seemingly misunderstand some of the members on this boards way of having a discussion.
