Default Favourite Greco-Roman art?

To go along with all of the other favourite threads! Please include photos if possible.

Being a fiend for anything Macedonian, I love the Derveni Krater.

Here are some photo's of it, currently in the Thessaloniki Museum.

Also a big fan of the Eleusis Vase/Amphore, with the famous depiction of Odysseus and his men blinding Polyphemus.

Yea Minoan wall frescoes are AMAZING!

So colourful and lively. I love them all.

I wrote a big paper last year on the Blue Monkey frescoes, both from Thera (Akrotiri) and Knossos.

There's also of course the women you posted, dolphins, the saffron gatherer, just so many, they are all amazing.

I'm also a HUGE fan of mosaics. It's just such a beautiful art form and one that spans so many different cultures and time periods.

Mosaic from Dion, a sanctuary to Zeus in Macedon, probably Roman but made by Greek artists from the 3rd century BC.

Mosaics from Nicopolis, built by Octavian to commemorate his victory at Actium, late 1st century BC.

Good idea for a thread. I love some of the ancient coins of the Greeks but here is a famous one I saw on the wall of a Pompeii brothel. I don't know if its good art but it certainly shows that some things never change.

That one is fantastic isn't it? Some things never do change. There are so many amazing mosaics from Pompeii and Herculaneum that aree not just fantastic art, but also give significant insight into society and how people lived. I do like that brothel one though, there were a bunch of those in some of the brothels, depicting different scenes, the customer would point to the one that he wanted and they would give him the price.

Here's a few more great ones, of the hundreds!

Not exactly Greco-Roman and not exactly off topic either, these Egyptian mummy portraits reflect the influence of the Greco-Roman style which can be seen in their light, fluid earthy style.
Stylistically related to Greco-Roman painting, this style of portraiture flourished in Roman Egypt and was created for a typically Egyptian purpose: inclusion in the funerary trappings of mummies. Often painted on boards that were to be placed over the head of the deceased. I am struck most by the expressive individuality of each face. If I saw them on the street there would be no problem recognizing them from their portrait. I am of the opinion, and this is strictly my own, that most of the funerary portraits I have seen were painted by feminine hand. Here are a bunch that even though they are shown in reduced size can still see individual character.

OOOPS!!! I meant for the images I posted above to be larger. Apparently photobucket has limits on the depth of its images. So here are some in larger format to make up for that. The image in the bottom middle is Greek. Note that the Greek image is more stylized.
