This is my family Coat of Arms - Dowle an old English name not sure what it means as have been told two different things 1. derives from dullard - means village idiot. 2. description of type of land. Know which one i'd rather believe!

Did heraldry begin with the Celts?

http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coc...ogy/herald.htm

Perhaps it wasnt heraldry as we know it, but the numbers of colors a person was allowed to wear had a relationship to thier social rank in the society?

It is interesting to note that heraldic is a very special kind of hieroglyphic or symbolic "writing".
