Assuming there is such a thing...
Is a soul an idividual, is my soul who i am?

Regarding a possible afterlife : Will you be you? Or does your energy return to the source?
Will your atoms be recycled?

Do you ever think about these things? What do you think?

just sitting here
Yup i contemplate these things fairly often Zeno ,and i think it is the soul part , that really is the you in the shell , that does not age and is eternal ,

I also think that it goes back and joins the other souls , here it will merge and become one with all the others , so it will not only retain the knowledge of any lives it has had , but also the knowledge of all lives , ever .... where it will realise that it is a very small part of one soul .

it will add it's experiences to the pool of knowledge and experience of all previous lives .i think this one soul has all knowledge life has ever had , but it has not had all experiences that are possible ,so we are experiencing on its behalf , and for it.

I would like to know precisely where in the evolutionary chain did the soul develop. Does bacteria have a soul? Do ants? How about fish? A prairie dog? How about a dog? Do dolphins have a soul? Maybe elephants?

Socrates said "Know thyself". He was talking about the soul, which is the infinite part of you. We all know about the container. It has eyes and ears, arms and legs. But the thing that is contained? It is infinite. Quite a unique arrangement. We are the vessel where the finite and infinite come together.

But where does the soul go when you get a head injury? Are you the same soul as before? What if your entire personality changes after an accident?

Can the soul become damaged like the body?

It seems that what we perceive as the soul, is actually the mind, and the mind can be injured by a bang or by mental illnesses of all types. Then where is the soul?

I can see the 'soul' as a natural life-energy-force that does make us
who we are, how we view life and perceive things. Our 'soul' is tied
to our family/ancestors in one great link.

They could all be part of the same soul. Suppose the mechanics of life evolved together with whatever is a soul. Self-consciousness as the body getting aware of the mind.

Personally, I believe sapience is prerequisite to the formation of a soul.

The soul is real. That is, "it is, was, and will be". It doesn't change. It's the same within you as when you were born, when you will die. You can test that by asking yourself if you are the same person as you were when you were little. Yes, your body has changed, your mind has changed, but you are still you. And you will still be you the day you die.

The body, brain, all that can change. These things are temporal. The soul is immortal. When you experience it, you will see that it will always be the same.

What about when someone has a head injury though? Their whole personality can alter, like the person has disappeared never to return. So does the personality reflect the soul or is the soul more of a introverted part of us that is not obvious in our personalities?

Human is body and soul, that is, psychosomatic being. Not a soul with or within body. In the Bible, "soul" is not something humans have but other creatures doesn't. We are all created as living beings. Afterlife will be physical: life in (re)new(ed) world. :)

Even plants have a kind of soul. But no thoughts, no intent, no sensitivity to pain, plants don't care if you chop them down, because they can't care. Oh yeah, and no brain.

Precisely Bri. I think this was well iterated in the thread "There is no you" in the philosophy section.

I know a .... who was a student of the soul. She practised a way to see within and enjoy the peace that lies there.

She is old now and her short term memory is shot. She gets confused about times, what happened recently. But she is crystal clear about that peace within, its value and how to enjoy it.

Those personality changes are simply impulsive, like when you are grumpy. They don't change who you are. If I have a bad day, I am not a different person. We actually don't know much about the souls around us. What we persieve about them is based on Karma, their experiences throughout their lifetime. Think about, what is a person but the sum of their memories, every person is shaped by what they have experienced. We are the stories we live, the tales we tell ourselves. (love that quote, Ac2 actually borrowed it from an ancient korean source).

Some people, due to brain damage, do become completely different people; tastes, outlook, disposition may all become radically different.

I do agree that we are a sum of our experiences, perceptions, and genetics. Though when we strip all of the individual pieces away, what is left?
