Best War Movie?

Sands of Iwo Jima? Tora, Tora, Tora? Saving Private Ryan? Kelly's Heroes?
Here are my top three:
3. Paths of Glory. Kirk Douglas leads this anti-war war movie. Folly of WW1 convincingly portrayed.

2. Sahara. Bogart leads an international platoon - Frenchie, South African, American, Sudanese(!), Brits - to victory in North Africa. Realistic combat sequences; a Stuart tank co-stars.

1. A Bridge Too Far. Made in the 70's: color, good special effects, location shoots, planes, tanks, etc still available. Huge cast: Olivier, Ullman, Redford, O'Neill, Caine, Attenborough, Connery, Hackman, Caan, Gould, Bogarde, Fox, Schell, Kruger. Ratzenberger! ( Yes, Cliffie the mailman). Great combat scenes, ultimately an anti-war message. And the best musical theme ever.

6. Tora, Tora, Tora;

5. We Were Soldiers;

4. Battle of the Bulge;

3. A Bridge Too Far;

2. Black Hawk Down;

1. Saving Private Ryan

Is Paths of Glory the one where Douglas allows his own son to be executed? If it is that is an incredible movie.

My choice is :
Saving Private Ryan

Can anyone give me some information about 'Tora Tora Tora' ?

Tora Tora Tora was a movie about the attack on Pearl Harbor. It was told from both the American and Japanese point of view. It was a very good movie. When it came out in 1970 I was working as an usher in a movie theater. The movie was booked there for 8 weeks. I saw it at least 10 times a week. I say at least because on the weekends it played 5 times a day, for the 8 weeks. I would highly recommend it.

I always liked "The Cruel Sea" and "Das Boot", best seen together to give you the view from both sides of the Battle of the Atlantic.

So many movies; so little time. In the non-fiction category the nominees are:

Patton (because of George C. Scott. Every time I read something on Patton it's his image that pops up)

MacArthur (see above)

A Bridge Too Far (great casting)

The Longest Day (the Muhammad Ali of war films)

Black Hawk Down (had me on the edge of my seat during the battle scenes cursing at the Somali)

Lawrence of Arabia (see Patton and MacArthur)

Einstein and Eddington (not actually a war film but the war is used as a backdrop)

The Charge of the Light Brigade 1968 (film which confirmed my belief that the British are crazy)

Zulu (very disappointed as I was rooting for the Zulu; still a great film even if somewhat embellished)

In the fiction category the nominees are;

Ride With the Devil (really great movie about the bushwackers and Jayhawkers in Missouri)

Occurrence at Owl Creek (best short film ever)

Gallipoli 1981 (Mel Gibson; nough said)

Paths of Glory (Saw this film in a history class. Great choice)

From Here to Eternity (not much war action but a great film none the less)

Das Boat doesn't count as it is a Tv series ( would add Private Schultz into that!).

Das Boot was originally released as a film however so much was shot that later the mini series was shown on the BBC.
