Iraqi Republican Guard was an elite Military force of Iraq that was created in 1969.

It was special Military unit which was directly loyal to Iraq's Bath party rulers, it reached it's height during Saddam Hussein's rule. Fierce loyalty towards ruler was one of main eligibility criteria. Compared to Regular Iraqi Army, Republican Guard was more trained, better equipped. At first it did not participate in foreign wars, how ever it engaged in 2nd Battle of Al Faw, and defeated Iranians.

During Gulf War, Republican Guard bore the blunt of Iraqi invasion, unprepared Kuwaiti forces quickly collapsed, then it was with drawn and replaced by Regular army units.

Republican Guard later engaged with US troops in battle of Medina Ridge and 73 Easting, but were defeated.

After Gulf war, Republican Guard brutally put down rebellions through out Iraq against Saddam rule.

It could not make much resistance during 2003 Invasion of Iraq. After fall of Iraq it was disbanded. It is believed by some that some of former Republican Guard members joined in Iraqi insurgency.

Republican Guard was generally armed with Ak 47, it's Iraqi variant Tabuk, T 72 tank and it's Iraqi variant Assad Babil tank. It also had it's attack helicopter squadron Mi-24.

Awesome
They weren't much of an elite unit. During the two battles you mentioned, the US suffered a total of 2 killed.

Dear god, the Lion of Babylon, a tank whose only purpose in life was to give people who had bought T72 monkey models something to look down on and snigger.

Built from kit parts and assembled in Iraq it had shoddy steel that never met military grade, lacked gun stabilisation, ERA, any sort of decent rangefinder and if you could get it to work and aim straight the ammunition was old and badly it would be a miracle if it actually fired.

Thats if the tank even worked, supposedly the hulls came from Russia, the turrets from Poland and there were a few measurement faults so fitting them together was an artform in itself.

Which is still not saying an awful lot.

They weren't "elite". They were less bad and better equipped, but that didn't make them Iraq's "Waffen SS".

To a practical soldier, that's not a bad unit to surrender to :)

The thing about the Republican Guard is that they were politically reliable

All dictators have units they can absolutely count on (or at least they believe they can)
