Of all the movies about the kid, which one do you think best captures the story and the character of Billy the Kid?

My response is the opposite of your op. I've always liked Chisum, a John Wayne movie.

As Wiki puts it:

Coburn-Kristofferson etc. That was a outstanding cast.

After that, Emilio's version with another good cast.

I didn't really care for the first Young Guns, but I thought the second one was entertaining.

I really like the Peckinpah movie, in entertainment value it arguably ranks highest of all the listed movies, but Kris Kristoffersen sure wasn't a "Billy the Kid", more like "Billy the Fullgrown Man", and it also shows in his character portrayal, it is way too settled and laid back.

Emilio Estevez was much closer both in physical likeness as well as in character to how I percieve Billy the Kid to have been.

Billy the Kid vs Dracula <1966>, with John Carradine, scared my eyes open back in the day.

Billy the Kid was a rouge, and (according to some) a psychopath. Though he murdered people easily, his butcher's bill wasn't even that impressive compared to many of history's other illustrious murderers. He was also ugly, though almost charismatic about it with that 'devil-may-care' aura and those adorable buck teeth.

I don't know how to take his cultural alter-ego - generally depicted as a clean-cut, wholesome, all-American hero.
