I love music from these countries, particularly traditional folk music. Any good artists in these genres? Especially in Turkish Oriental music.

I dont think I understand what you seek for.

What do you mean by Turkish Oriental Music?
Here's an example:

It's sometimes also referred to as Bellydancing music.

hehe Belloc, it would be an Arab tune but it's really Turkish. If you like oriental music, you should try something more refined like Hossam Ramzy & Phil Thornton: Immortal Egypt. It's a great album.

as for Greek stuff I like the following (Thracian traditional music with a modern touch): [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oeg457TvQIc]Palyrria - Pyrovasia 1208 - YouTube[/ame]

Btw, I absolutely hate modern hits and stuff...Cheap, mass-producing, fastfood music.

heh, Selda Bağcan. Midas, are you Greek or Turkish or a Tureek? If you like this sort of tunes, Tülay German and Sümeyra Çakır are good picks for you.

Turna means a crane. In Turkish folklore, cranes are likened to news-bearers.

My mother used to have this cd with greek bouzouki songs, and I remember there was some song "Varka Sto Gialo"
I found it a catchy tune :)
Can any greek member now tell me the answer the question that i've wondered for the past 20 years: What does the sentence "Varka Sto Gialo" actually mean?

I actually found the song on Youtube:

It means "boat in the sea". Hardly worthy of a mystery lasting 20 years.

This is a love song actually, and a bit on the light side, not characteristic of the music of Theodorakis. Still, it has a nice, catchy tune.

Thx for the info :) Glad to finally know what it's about. I really should learn greek...It's such a beautiful language.

I've spent the past hour listening to Varga Sto Giallo now. Can't get the tune out of my head :)

Such a lovely song...is it a love one?

Isn't the sea just wonderful?

PS: For some strange reason, melancholy and nostalgia suit Istanbul and Bosporus well, at least in my mind. The song reflects those feelings.

If you ever do try to learn Greek and require any assistance, I'd be glad to help in any way. :)

Here's another similar tune, Theodorakis again, it might help you to get the other tune out of your head. :D

It's about a small boat; personification of a boat. The boat is likened to an incautious young person. The lines are about the warnings of such a dangerous expedition to the vast sea and the narration of the possible outcome.

Yes, the sea is wonderful. Since my childhood, I always lived close to the sea and it is an indispensable part of me now; desire to be close to the sea.

I'd be very grateful if you can recommend me some music and supply some traductions.
Till now, the only greek words I know are Kalimera, Kalispera, Kalynicta and Iamas. (and I'm not sure about the spelling :p)
