"The city mayor says women straddling motorbikes are not in line with Islamic values"

BBC News - Indonesia city to ban women 'straddling motorbikes'

A city in the Indonesian province of Aceh which follows Sharia has ordered female passengers not to straddle motorbikes behind male drivers.
Suaidi Yahya, mayor of Lhokseumawe, says it aims to save people's "morals and behaviours".

Hilarious, if nothing else!

If the bike wears a burqa they should be fine.

i wouldn't think it would be wise to ride a bike in a burqa in the first place. if the burqa gets caught in the spokes, the woman is going to go flying off the bike (which would be kind of funny to watch:lol:)..

Awesome
According to the article, a well known Indonesian Muslim activist, Ulil Abshar Abdalla, points out:

"How to ride a motorbike is not regulated in Sharia. There is no mention of it in the Koran or Hadiths," he said on his Twitter account, referring to the second most sacred text in Islam after the Koran."

Indeed. I just find the justification "they don't look like women" to be hilarious.

What a tragic oversight.

Presumably the Koran and Hadiths were OK with the use of Twitter, then. I wonder where it was mentioned.........

This is exactly why 1400 plus year old religious rules don't make sense in modern society.

It's funny to us, but the problem is that these primitives take this rubbish seriously, and think everyone else should too.

It really shouldn't surprise us. I mean these are the same fanatics who expect women to walk around wearing a tent with eye-holes all day in 100+ degree heat and humidity.

Should a ban on straddling motorbikes really surprise us?

When some religions have many followers who believe that god literally created the world out of thin air, perhaps we should not be so quick to criticise the beliefs of people in some parts of the world, who, for all sorts of reasons, have not had access to the education that we have enjoyed.

Governments and religious leaders trying to control morality is nothing new, and is not limited to Islam.

This is actually another manifestation of gender inequality. It is evident that the prejudice is focus on women.
