Doing a huge amount of research on Edo Japan for my PhD. In doing so, put this article of Torture in Edo Japan together. Though it might be of interest to a few folks here.

Going to follow it up with an article on crime and punishment in Edo Japan. As criminologist living in Tokyo, I'm really enjoy this topic.

Please let me know what you think.

Thanks very much. I really enjoyed writing it. Looking forward to doing more research. Some of the old Japanese texts are incredible reads!

Actually, if there is anything you'd like to see in this vein of article, let me know. I'm happy to put more together if people want to read them.

Very interesting. The last time I was in Matsumoto I visited the old regional court building (the city may be famous for its castle, but it also has a number of Meiji era buildings in great shape.) It had a nice collection of equipment used by the police (or rather its equivalent) in the Edo period.

I've yet to go to Matsumoto castle, but I will certainly try to get out there.

I was lucky as we managed to charm the curator of the Meiji University Museum into letting us handle a few of the exhibits (should rephrase that...).

There are some embarrassing photos of me brandishing weapons while wearing a helmet from the exhibition. They won't be published.
