Definitely closer than the Far East, I would assume.:D

It depends, what about it is for Americans, Japan is closer to them than Iran is.

Probably those guys who named the land "middle east" didn't know about geoghraphy.

If you go that way, Japan would be the Near West. That would just be weird....

Well then according to the map on the Wiki page Persian culture has not only influenced Western Asia but also Southern ,Central, East and large parts of South East Asia. This also brings up the Turkic Mongol influences in Asia with it.
An example for Persian influence in SE Asia is Cham people of Champa
However, a small band of Chams, who called themselves Kaum Jumaat, follow a localised adaptation of Islamic theology, according to which they pray only on Fridays and celebrate Ramadan for only three days. However, some members of this group have joined the larger Muslim Cham community in their practices of Islam in recent years. One of the factors for this change is the influence by members of their family who have gone abroad to study Islam.
The Islam theology that small band practices, is from Persia and that is Shiite Islam. And moreover, sometimes they mix Islam with some local gods. That means Allah is the highest God, but there are other gods like wind god, ocean god, rain god.....And a powerful Fire god included. About the 18th century, this religion cocktail sometimes became a shaman cult of Fire God.
Champa was one of the first bases spreading Islam in SE Asia.
Later, Shiite Islam theology were attacked as "unorthodox" and supplanted by Sunnite Islam, came along with the Turkish military aids("influences") for Malacca and Aceh (Another Cham Kingdom).
After the Vietnamese invasion of Champa. Cham Islam was isolated from the world. Wich leads to this:
However, Vietnam's Muslims remained relatively isolated from the mainstream of world Islam, and their isolation, combined with the lack of religious schools, caused the practice of Islam in Vietnam to become increasingly syncretic. Command of Arabic is not widespread even among religious leaders, and some Muslims are reported to pray to Ali and refer to him as the "Son of God".
They pray to Ali because they were Shiite.
Btw, I'm Vietnamese.

Lol. I had an editor once who detested the term 'Middle-East'. She would have us change all references to the region to West Asia. So it was always 'West Asia peace process' for her. I found that rather finicky at that stage but she had a point. West Asia tells you exactly where it is located, Middle-East on the other hand is a bit dicey. Besides, 'middle-east' is just wrong usage for Asians since the region is actually to our west.

For me, middle-east is Ontario ( i am a vancouverite): It isn't quite east, like the Atlantic provinces are, but they insist on referring themselves as 'eastern canadians/from out east' etc. so they are the middle-east for me!
:)
