In that case you'll be after referring to the other book of the same title by James Michener. so the answer will be Antonio López de Santa Anna and Samuel Houston.

Fine that, make it Guinness........

From where do these lines come?

"Young Hakon was the Norseman's pride,
And Steig-Thorer was on his side.
Young Hakon from the Upland came,
With royal birth, and blood, and name.
Young Hakon from the king demands
His royal birthright, half the lands;
Magnus will not the kingdom break, --
The whole or nothing he will take."

This is from the Saga of Hakon the Good (or is it Hakon the fair??) from some Norse saga or other. Did Sibelius put this to music??

Can't say for sure but maybe you are thinking of the Finnish epic the Kalevala from which he based his Kullervo Symphony and I think a couple of other compositions.

Could be right there. I think I'm thinking of the Lemminkainen Suite.

its been a few years since i read it so i might be wrong but i think this is from magnus barefoots saga from the heimskringla. it tells the story of hakon and magnus who became kings at the end of the 11th century but only reigned for a very short time.

You aren't wrong. It is from the Saga of Magnus Barefoot. He became Magnus III of Norway and he ruled for 10 years - his cousin Hakon , who was co-ruler died in 1095.

Your go Laura........
