Yes, that's a long term hope. In the meantime, we have already drifted away from the UK and the US. China is now our major trading partner as well as India and many SE Asian countries. We are geographically on the Pacific Rim. That makes us part of Asia. Our economic trading partners have reflected that reality for many years.
While it's true Australia still suffers from American cultural imperialism, that influence ain't what it used to be. In terms of being an American vassal state, I think that's a pretty ignorant claim to make. Australia isn't the Philippines , Puerto Rico nor even Pago Pago. However, I'm quite willing to look at any evidence about Australia being a US vassal state.
