Very True , so called ''Victorian Values'' and the enterprise cultures of this time have had a major impact also .

Yes, and even things like how we divide the rooms of our homes. The whole idea of separate bedrooms, or the notions of living room, dining room, study, den, etc.

I believe aspects like this are far more influential than battles or individual historical events
I agree.

It may give rise to some degree of controversy , and be contrary to the historical purists among us , but one of the major influences is American Social culture , with a bit of British re imported influences . Through music , fashion trends, teenage cults, film TV . Advertising and sport . I would suggest these have had a major impact everywhere in the ''WEST' 'Regardless of the Latin or North European origins of our populations

It's clear that after the industrial revolution in Great Britain [which gave a model of development to all the rest of the Western countries], the colonial period [when UK and France leaded the group], it was the American locomotive [I would say from the 20's] to give the pace to the West.

I think that the skyscrapers at NY were the evident clue that on the other side of the ocean they were running fast.

The Greco-Roman periods, the Catholic Church, the Renaissance, the enlightenment, classical liberalism, industrial revolution. From recent centuries, mainly from Britain, the following

The progression of democracy
Property Rights
Freedom of the press
Capitalism
Common law - the rights of the individual
A structured approach to scientific study
A strong education system

These are the soft assets for long term success in any country, places like China are a long way from achieving many of these
