@Bunyip, Gallipoli is one of my favorite war movies, but since its WWI I did not post it in this thread. :)

I'm a huge fan of Peter Wier.

Saving Private Ryan

I'll never understand why the movie was so popular. To me, it was cliched and the plot was lacking. I felt as if the whole movie was more about A to B to C problems in finding Ryan rather than a great example of World War II combat and relationships. The only good part in my mind was the very beginning, adn that was it.

Vietnam. Capturing a crazy colonel. This doesn't go into the topic.

I'd like to also note that Pearl Harbor with Ben Afleck is the worst WWII moive ever concived.

I'd barely even call it a movie. Anything with Ben Affleck and/or Kate beckinsale is probably trash anyway :)

Band of Brothers,

This was mentioned before so I can't second it. But I'll third, and forth, and fifth it... all the way down each episode.

Then comes The Pacific.

Saving Private Ryan

I liked this one, but had read enough that from the outset I knew that the movie was screwing with us from the outset. At least three of Tom Hanks' scenes on the beach came from three different books. That's why I like BoB so much. Pretty much everything you see is true as it was experienced by real individuals. And it's still an awesome story.

Yes, I know the movie and perhaps the member just slipped in adding it to WWII?

It isn't a great movie, just as I don't buy into all the Band of Brothers hype. But
SPR just stuck up on WWII movies.

I'd like to list a movie that I haven't seen listed: not great, but, enjoyable.

I know I'm probably in the minority here and I love everything about WWII, but I found both Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers to be boring.

All Western films are rubbish, everyone in the West has been brainwashed.

Look at what the Russians can do:

Little known in the West, but it's a monster of a film made in 1970s Soviet Russia, and in Soviet Russia the movies watch you!

I initially heard about it a few years back from my ex girlfriend as she was Russian.

The whole film is about 7.5 hours long and runs from the Battle of Kursk to the Surrender of Germany, there's also a shorter Western version but I've never seen it. I do have it downloaded in Russian with English subtitles and it's fantastic!

You get the idea...

This and Das Boot are probably the best war films I've ever seen, Saving Private Ryan and other rot are a disgrace in comparison.

I'm so glad someone else sees that, as tjadams said about SPR. The riveting story behind Enemy at the Gates or the power of Downfall loom over those two examples and cast a long shadow...
