Of all the Gin joints in all the world.

I will still vote

Casablanca.

But I suspect that isn't the type of War movie they meant, I can't comment on Shaving Ryan's Privates, but Zulu has got to be in with a shout.

No, Casablanca was exactly what they meant. I loved the part where the Nazi Major is leading the chorus on "Die Wacht am Rhein" just as Lazlo comes out of Rick's apartment, pauses for a moment in outrage and then rushes down to lead the orchestra and the entire nightclub in a rendition of "La Marseillaise".... Drowning out the Nazis and forcing them back into their seats humiliated. All the while Rick is seen in the background nodding his approval to the band leader. Emblematic of the US involvement in the war up until the invasion of North Africa.

Very influential in turning fence sitters on the war into blazing patriots. By far the best critically received war movie of all time.

One of my new favorites is "Red Cliff". Oh this film is amazing. The battle scenes are great. There are even some roman tactics used by the armies.

I guess I have to say; my favorite modern war movie is "Flags of Our Fathers" . I watched it when I was 8 and it stuck with me.

Another good movie, is: "With Fire and Sword". That one's about the Ukrainian-Russo independence from Lietuva;Lithuania, in the early 1600s.

It's in Polish, so you need to use subtitles on youtube.

I grew up with that move! Had it no casette and watched all the time. Still probably remember most of the script. Kinda bloody for a small kid when i come to think about it, but bach then i adored it. Always imagined i was a Winged Hussar riding down the pillaging cossack mob. :D

My favorite is probably Full Metal Jacket or Das Boot.

Isn't Das Boot generally considered the greatest war movie ever made?

According to film critics, such as Roger Ebert, the greatest war movie ever made is Apocalypse Now, because it shows the darker sides of human nature:

Das Boot is considered to be a quite mediocre film in artistic terms and it is not anywhere near the greatest war movies and not even among the greatest WW2 movies. I found it entertaining but nothing really special.

I think that the greatest WW2 movie ever made would be Grave of the Fireflies, which is actually an anime movie, but it has been said by some to be the film which generates the strongest emotional reaction ever made. The whole film is available on youtube.

Here is Ebert's coments on it:

I really love Apocalypse Now, it's my favorite movie(Not war movie, just movie). But there's one movie that I think is even better if we're talking about the war genre. If I had to choose my favorite war movie it would be The Pianist. I really love it, because it feels like you're there. And it's not about the soldiers, but the people. Some don't even consider it a war movie, but for me it is, and it's the best
